What’s New

2023, June

As a practicing physician, it is often frustrating not to have solutions for our patients’ concerns. Hair loss is a common problem that many practitioners tend to gloss over because we have not had great answers. It is always exciting when we have new treatment options with actual results.
When patients come to the office with concerns over thinning or losing hair, it is a very sensitive and upsetting topic. Patients report symptoms sometimes start without warning and often for no apparent reason. A patient may seek help from her hairstylist, pcp, dermatologist and often come to us as a last resort when there have been no effective solutions.
As gynecologists, we are aware of the large part that hormones can play on hair loss that can span all age ranges. Imbalances in female hormones are associated with thinning of the hair shaft and over time can become visibly prominent. Hormonal hair loss occurs in the front and crown of the head. It can often start in the part that is located in the center of the hair and grow wider. This problem does not have to be one that you just live with. Very successful treatment regimens are now available. We have now implemented a PRP ( platelet rich plasma) hair loss treatment program at OGA. You may be familiar with the amazing results that PRP has on the face but it also has regenerative properties for hair. Using a patient’s own blood sample, platelets are injected to the scalp that can stimulate hair, thickening, and growth. Over the course of several months - patient can see thickening of the hair shaft and improvement in hair loss. I have personally treated several of my patient’s with amazing results. Combined with prescription medication and home treatment regimens we have several success stories
My advice for our patients that may be experiencing hair changes is to make an appointment for an evaluation- we may have a treatment option that’s right for you.
